Deploying a frontend project used to mean configuring an Apache server, buying a VPS, and spending a weekend on infrastructure. Today you push to GitHub and it’s live in 60 seconds. The hard part is choosing which platform to push to.
Vercel, Netlify, and Cloudflare Pages are the three platforms that dominate this space. They’re all good. They’re also meaningfully different — in free tier limits, edge function capabilities, CI/CD behavior, and pricing at scale. Picking wrong costs you money or forces a painful migration later.
This comparison focuses on what matters for small projects and indie developers: free tier generosity, deploy speed, edge functions, and the gotchas that don’t show up in the marketing copy.

Why Hosting Choice Actually Matters
For a simple static site, any of these platforms will serve it fine. The differences emerge at the edges:
- When your site gets a sudden traffic spike and you hit bandwidth limits
- When you add server-side logic (API routes, edge functions, SSR)
- When your build process gets complex and 300 free build minutes runs out
- When your team grows and you need environment management, preview URLs, and access controls
These are the moments where a wrong choice becomes expensive. Let’s look at each platform honestly.
Vercel: The Next.js Native Platform
Vercel built Next.js. That relationship is central to understanding both the platform’s strengths and its limitations. If you’re building with Next.js, Vercel is the platform it was designed for — App Router, Server Components, ISR, Edge Middleware, and all the rest work without configuration.
What Vercel Does Best
Next.js integration — Zero configuration for every Next.js feature. Server Components, API routes, image optimization, and edge middleware just work. Other platforms support Next.js, but Vercel supports it natively. Nuance matters here: on competing platforms, some Next.js features (ISR with fine-grained control, streaming, edge middleware) require workarounds or don’t work at all.
Preview deployments — Every pull request gets a unique preview URL automatically. Share it with designers, product managers, or clients before merging. Preview deployments mirror production configuration — same environment variables, same edge config.
Edge Network — Vercel runs on a global edge network. Static assets are cached close to users worldwide. For most static content, Time to First Byte (TTFB) is excellent.
Analytics and Speed Insights — Vercel’s Web Analytics and Speed Insights provide real user metrics without adding a separate analytics SDK. Useful for understanding performance in production.

Vercel’s Gotchas
Pricing at scale is aggressive. The Pro plan is $20/month per team member. Once you need the Pro features (more concurrent builds, team members, analytics), costs climb. At 10 team members, you’re at $200/month before any additional resource usage.
Vendor lock-in is real for Next.js. Vercel’s proprietary features (ISR behavior, Edge Config, Vercel KV) don’t transfer cleanly to other platforms. If you build on Vercel-specific Next.js features and later need to migrate, it’s work.
Not framework-agnostic. A Svelte, Vue, or plain React (non-Next.js) project works fine on Vercel, but you’re not getting any differentiated value over Netlify or Cloudflare Pages.

Netlify Identity — Lightweight user authentication (email/password, OAuth) built into the platform. For small projects that need simple auth without setting up your own auth service, this is convenient.
Build plugins — Netlify’s build plugin ecosystem lets you hook into the build process for things like image optimization, accessibility checks, or cache management. More flexible than Vercel’s equivalent.
Netlify Dev — Local development that mirrors your production environment, including functions. The local emulation is accurate, which reduces “works on my machine” deploys.

Netlify’s Gotchas
Build minutes burn fast. If you’re pushing multiple times a day across feature branches, 300 minutes goes quickly. Upgrading to Pro ($19/month) gets you 1,000 minutes — still not as generous as Vercel’s 6,000.
Edge functions are newer and less mature than Vercel’s, though they’ve improved significantly in 2024.
Pricing is competitive but complex. Netlify’s add-on pricing for forms, identity, and analytics can add up. Read the pricing page carefully before assuming the Starter plan covers your use case.
Cloudflare Pages: The Performance and Value Play

Unlimited bandwidth on free tier — This is the headline feature. Vercel and Netlify cap free bandwidth at 100 GB/month. Cloudflare Pages has no bandwidth limit on the free tier. For high-traffic static sites or media-heavy projects, this is significant.
Near-zero cold starts — Cloudflare Workers (which power Pages Functions) use the V8 isolate model instead of containers. Cold starts are measured in milliseconds, not seconds. If your edge functions are latency-sensitive, this matters.
Global network reach — Cloudflare has 300+ data centers worldwide. Your Pages site is served from the closest point to every user. For international audiences, this is a real performance advantage.
Cloudflare ecosystem integration — If you use Cloudflare for DNS (as many developers do), Pages integrates seamlessly. Custom domains, SSL, and DNS management all live in the same dashboard.
500 build minutes/month free — Better than Netlify’s 300, though still less than Vercel’s 6,000.
Cloudflare Pages’ Gotchas
Pages Functions limitations — Cloudflare Workers run on a subset of Node.js APIs. Code that works locally or on Vercel may require changes for Workers compatibility. If your functions use Node.js APIs not supported in the Workers runtime, you’ll hit issues.
Less mature DX — The Cloudflare Pages dashboard and developer experience are less polished than Vercel or Netlify. The deployment logs, error messages, and preview URL workflow are functional but not as smooth.
Next.js support is incomplete. Next.js on Cloudflare Pages works via the @cloudflare/next-on-pages adapter, but not all Next.js features are supported. App Router streaming, some ISR configurations, and certain middleware behaviors have known limitations.

- Preview URLs and team collaboration are important to your workflow

Choose Netlify if:

Netlify is the right call when you need the mature feature set — forms, identity, build plugins — without running separate services for each. The 300 free build minutes is a constraint, but the overall platform maturity is real.
