Markdown to HTML Converter Online: Convert MD Files to HTML Free

Markdown is the universal format for technical writing β€” README files, documentation, blog posts, issue trackers, and wikis all use it. But when you need the rendered HTML β€” for an email template, a CMS, a static site generator, or copy-pasting into a rich text editor β€” you need a reliable Markdown to HTML converter.

What Is Markdown?

Markdown is a lightweight markup language created by John Gruber in 2004. It uses plain text characters to define formatting, making it readable as raw text and convertible to rich HTML.

# Heading 1

Regular paragraph with **bold**, *italic*, and `inline code`.

- List item 1
- List item 2

> Blockquote text

Rendered HTML output:

<h1>Heading 1</h1>
<p>Regular paragraph with <strong>bold</strong>, <em>italic</em>, and <code>inline code</code>.</p>
<ul>
  <li>List item 1</li>
  <li>List item 2</li>
</ul>
<blockquote><p>Blockquote text</p></blockquote>
<p><a href="https://example.com">Link text</a></p>
<p><img src="image.png" alt="Alt text"></p>

Try it now: DevPlaybook Markdown Preview & Converter β€” write Markdown on the left, see rendered HTML on the right in real time.

When You Need Markdown-to-HTML Conversion

Email Templates

Email clients don’t render Markdown. Convert your Markdown email draft to HTML, then paste into your email platform (Mailchimp, ConvertKit, SendGrid) or MJML template.

CMS and Blog Platforms

Some CMS platforms (WordPress, Ghost, Webflow) accept HTML but not Markdown natively. Convert your Markdown content to HTML for pasting.

Static Site Generators

Tools like Astro, Next.js, Hugo, and Jekyll convert Markdown to HTML during the build process. Understanding the output helps you debug rendering issues.

Documentation Sites

GitBook, Docusaurus, and Notion accept Markdown, but sometimes you need the raw HTML to style or embed content.

API Responses to Rich Text

Render Markdown stored in a database to HTML for display in a web application.

Markdown to HTML in Code

JavaScript (Node.js)

// Using marked (most popular)
import { marked } from 'marked';

const markdown = '# Hello\n\n**Bold** and *italic*';
const html = marked(markdown);
console.log(html);
// <h1>Hello</h1>
// <p><strong>Bold</strong> and <em>italic</em></p>

// Using markdown-it (more extensible)
import MarkdownIt from 'markdown-it';
const md = new MarkdownIt();
const html = md.render(markdown);

Python

import markdown

text = "# Hello\n\n**Bold** and *italic*"
html = markdown.markdown(text)
print(html)
# <h1>Hello</h1>
# <p><strong>Bold</strong> and <em>italic</em></p>

# With extensions (tables, code highlighting)
html = markdown.markdown(text, extensions=['tables', 'fenced_code'])

React (MDX / React-Markdown)

import ReactMarkdown from 'react-markdown';

function Article({ content }) {
  return <ReactMarkdown>{content}</ReactMarkdown>;
}

Security: Sanitizing Generated HTML

Converting user-provided Markdown to HTML can create XSS vulnerabilities if the Markdown contains raw HTML:

<!-- Attacker-supplied Markdown -->
<script>alert('xss')</script>

Always sanitize the HTML output when it comes from user input:

import { marked } from 'marked';
import DOMPurify from 'dompurify';

const html = DOMPurify.sanitize(marked(userMarkdown));

Most Markdown libraries have a sanitize or html: false option to strip raw HTML from the input.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Markdown the same as HTML?

No. Markdown is a source format that gets converted to HTML. HTML is the output that browsers render. Markdown is easier to write; HTML is what gets displayed.

Can Markdown files contain raw HTML?

Yes, in most Markdown flavors, you can include raw HTML blocks inside Markdown:

Normal **Markdown** text.

<div class="custom-callout">
  This is raw HTML inside Markdown.
</div>

More _Markdown_ here.

The HTML passes through to the output unchanged. However, mixing is discouraged for readability.

What’s the best Markdown library for JavaScript?

  • marked β€” fast, widely used, simple API
  • markdown-it β€” more extensible with plugin support
  • remark β€” AST-based, best for processing and transforming Markdown programmatically

For React apps, use react-markdown. For MDX (Markdown with JSX), use @mdx-js/mdx.

How do I add syntax highlighting to code blocks?

Use a library like highlight.js or Prism.js to add syntax highlighting to the fenced code blocks generated by your Markdown parser:

import { marked } from 'marked';
import hljs from 'highlight.js';

marked.setOptions({
  highlight: (code, lang) => hljs.highlight(code, { language: lang }).value
});

Can Markdown handle footnotes?

Standard Markdown doesn’t include footnotes, but GitHub Flavored Markdown and MultiMarkdown do:

Here is some text[^1] with a footnote.

[^1]: This is the footnote content.
