✅ Pros

  • + Rich built-in web dashboard for real-time monitoring
  • + Native multi-cluster support
  • + CNCF graduated project with strong community
  • + One-click rollback via Git history

⚠️ Cons

  • − Requires Kubernetes — not for non-K8s workloads
  • − Can be resource-heavy in large-scale deployments
  • − Learning curve for advanced RBAC configuration

ArgoCD: GitOps Continuous Delivery for Kubernetes

ArgoCD is a declarative, GitOps continuous delivery tool for Kubernetes. It follows the GitOps pattern of using Git repositories as the source of truth for defining the desired application state, then automatically syncing your Kubernetes clusters to match that state.

Key Features

  • Declarative GitOps: Define your entire application state in Git and let ArgoCD reconcile the live state continuously
  • Multi-cluster support: Manage deployments across multiple Kubernetes clusters from a single control plane
  • Web UI and CLI: Rich dashboard showing real-time application health, sync status, and resource topology
  • Automated sync policies: Configure auto-sync to trigger deployments on every Git commit, or require manual approval
  • Rollback support: One-click rollback to any previous state stored in Git history
  • SSO integration: Works with OIDC, LDAP, SAML, GitHub, and other identity providers
  • RBAC: Fine-grained access control per project and application
  • Webhook support: Trigger syncs on push events from GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, and more

Use Cases

  • Application deployments: Continuously deliver microservices to staging and production Kubernetes clusters
  • Infrastructure management: Manage cluster add-ons like monitoring stacks, ingress controllers, and operators
  • Multi-tenant platforms: Provide isolated application namespaces with RBAC for different teams
  • Progressive delivery: Integrate with Argo Rollouts for canary and blue-green deployment strategies
  • Compliance and auditability: Every change is traceable through Git commits with full audit trail

Quick Start

Install ArgoCD in your cluster and expose the API server:

kubectl create namespace argocd
kubectl apply -n argocd -f https://raw.githubusercontent.com/argoproj/argo-cd/stable/manifests/install.yaml

# Get the initial admin password
kubectl -n argocd get secret argocd-initial-admin-secret \
  -o jsonpath="{.data.password}" | base64 -d

# Port-forward to access the UI
kubectl port-forward svc/argocd-server -n argocd 8080:443

Create your first application pointing to a Git repo:

apiVersion: argoproj.io/v1alpha1
kind: Application
metadata:
  name: my-app
  namespace: argocd
spec:
  project: default
  source:
    repoURL: https://github.com/your-org/your-app
    targetRevision: HEAD
    path: k8s/overlays/production
  destination:
    server: https://kubernetes.default.svc
    namespace: my-app
  syncPolicy:
    automated:
      prune: true
      selfHeal: true

vs FluxCD: ArgoCD provides a richer out-of-the-box UI and is often preferred by teams that want visibility. FluxCD is more Kubernetes-native in its operator model and tends to be lighter weight. Many teams choose ArgoCD for its dashboard and application grouping features.

vs Spinnaker: Spinnaker is a full-featured delivery platform with more pipeline complexity, but requires significantly more infrastructure to operate. ArgoCD is simpler to run and purpose-built for Kubernetes GitOps workflows.

ArgoCD is the most widely adopted GitOps tool in the Kubernetes ecosystem and is a CNCF graduated project, making it a solid production choice for teams of all sizes.
