GitButler
A modern Git branch management UI built with Tauri and Rust. GitButler's virtual branch system lets you work on multiple branches at the same time in a single working directory — no stashing, no switching, just ship.
What is GitButler?
GitButler reimagines Git branch management from the ground up. Traditional Git GUIs wrap the same branch-checkout-commit-push flow with a prettier interface. GitButler throws that away and introduces virtual branches: you can have multiple branches active simultaneously in your working directory, assigning individual diff hunks to whichever branch they belong to. When you're ready, GitButler pushes each virtual branch as a real Git branch.
Built with Tauri (Rust backend, WebView frontend), GitButler is fast and lightweight. It integrates with GitHub to create pull requests directly from the UI, and its optional Butler Review feature provides AI-powered code feedback before you open a PR. GitButler is fully open-source under the MIT license.
Key Features
- Virtual branches — multiple branches active simultaneously in one working directory, assign hunks to branches freely
- Stacked PRs — build chains of pull requests that depend on each other, push and update them together
- Butler Review — optional AI-powered code review in the UI before opening a PR
- GitHub integration — create and manage pull requests without leaving GitButler
- Conflict-free branching — virtual branch logic separates changes before they conflict at the Git level
- Tauri + Rust backend — lightweight native app, much smaller than Electron-based alternatives
- Undo history — GitButler tracks its own operation history so you can undo actions that Git itself can't easily reverse
- Cross-platform — native builds for macOS (Apple Silicon + Intel), Linux, and Windows
Installation
# macOS (Homebrew) brew install gitbutler # All platforms: download installer from # https://gitbutler.com/downloads # Or build from source (Rust + Node required) git clone https://github.com/gitbutlerapp/gitbutler cd gitbutler cargo build --release
After installing, open GitButler and point it at any existing Git repository — no migration or re-cloning required.
Virtual Branches Workflow
The core GitButler workflow replaces the classic checkout → work → stash → switch dance:
- Open a repository in GitButler and create two or more virtual branches (e.g.
feat/authandfix/header-bug). - Make changes in your editor as normal. GitButler shows all uncommitted hunks in the sidebar.
- Drag-and-drop or click to assign each hunk to the correct virtual branch.
- Commit each virtual branch independently, with its own commit message.
- Push one or both branches to GitHub and open pull requests directly from GitButler.
GitButler vs Other Git GUIs
| Feature | GitButler | GitKraken | Tower | Sourcetree |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Virtual branches | Yes (unique) | No | No | No |
| Price | Free / Open source | Freemium | Paid ($69/yr) | Free |
| Runtime | Tauri (Rust) | Electron | Native | Java/Native |
| Stacked PRs | Yes | Limited | No | No |
| AI code review | Yes (Butler Review) | No | No | No |
| History visualization | Basic | Excellent | Excellent | Good |
Use Cases
- Working on a bug fix and a feature simultaneously without stashing
- Reviewing someone else's PR while continuing your own work on the same repo
- Separating unrelated improvements (e.g. refactor + new feature) that you made in the same editing session
- Building stacked pull request chains for large features split into reviewable chunks
- Getting AI feedback on your diff before requesting human review
Pros and Cons
Pros
- ✓ Virtual branches eliminate stashing and context switching
- ✓ Fast and lightweight (Tauri/Rust, not Electron)
- ✓ Free and open source under MIT license
- ✓ Stacked PR workflow built in
- ✓ Cross-platform native builds
- ✓ Undo history for GitButler operations
Cons
- ✗ Relatively new — some rough edges and missing features
- ✗ Limited history visualization compared to GitKraken or Tower
- ✗ Virtual branch model requires a mental shift from traditional Git
- ✗ Butler Review requires an external API key
- ✗ Smaller community and ecosystem than established tools
- ✗ Best for GitHub — GitLab/Bitbucket integration is secondary
Frequently Asked Questions
What is GitButler?▼
GitButler is a modern Git branch management UI built with Tauri and Rust. It reimagines how developers manage branches by introducing 'virtual branches' — letting you work on multiple feature branches simultaneously in a single working directory. Instead of the traditional checkout-and-switch flow, GitButler merges your changes virtually and lets you commit different hunks to different branches without ever running git checkout.
What are virtual branches in GitButler?▼
Virtual branches are GitButler's core innovation. They allow you to have multiple branches 'active' at the same time in your working directory. You assign individual file hunks (diff sections) to different virtual branches. GitButler tracks which changes belong to which branch internally. When you push, it creates the real Git branches automatically. This eliminates the need to stash changes, switch branches, and unstash — you just work on everything at once and organize as you go.
How does GitButler compare to GitKraken?▼
GitKraken is a full-featured Git GUI client focused on visualization, history browsing, and team collaboration features with a rich graph view. GitButler is narrower in scope but deeper in innovation — its virtual branch system is unique in the Git tooling ecosystem. GitKraken covers more Git operations (rebasing, conflict resolution UI, integrations) while GitButler is laser-focused on making branch management and PR workflows faster. GitKraken has a freemium model with paid team features; GitButler is open-source.
How does GitButler compare to Tower?▼
Tower is a premium, paid Git GUI for macOS and Windows with a polished interface and enterprise features. It excels at visualizing history and offering a complete Git GUI experience. GitButler is free and open-source, built on Tauri (lighter, faster), and solves a different problem: eliminating branch-switching friction via virtual branches. Tower targets developers who want a comprehensive GUI; GitButler targets developers frustrated by the multi-branch juggling act.
What is Butler Review?▼
Butler Review is GitButler's AI-powered code review feature. Before you create a pull request, GitButler can analyze your diff and provide feedback on code quality, potential bugs, and style issues. It integrates directly into the GitButler UI so you can review AI feedback alongside your actual diff without switching to an external tool. It is optional and requires an API key.
What platforms does GitButler support?▼
GitButler supports macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Linux (x64 and ARM), and Windows (x64). It is built with Tauri, which produces small, fast native binaries for each platform. On macOS you can install via Homebrew: 'brew install gitbutler'. On other platforms, download the installer from gitbutler.com. Linux users may also find it in some AUR packages.
