Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between CPU requests and limits?▼
Requests are what Kubernetes uses for scheduling — the node must have this much CPU available. Limits are the maximum a container can use. If a container exceeds its CPU limit, it is throttled. If it exceeds its memory limit, it is killed (OOMKilled).
What units are used for CPU in Kubernetes?▼
CPU is measured in cores or millicores. 1 CPU = 1000m. So 0.5 CPU = 500m. Memory is specified in bytes, but common suffixes are Mi (mebibytes) and Gi (gibibytes). 1Gi = 1024Mi.
How should I set resource requests and limits?▼
Start with conservative estimates, then measure actual usage with kubectl top pods. Set requests to the average usage and limits to 2-3x the average (or peak) to handle spikes. Never set limits much lower than requests.
What is the cost estimate based on?▼
Cost is estimated using average cloud pricing: ~$0.048/vCPU-hour and ~$0.006/GB-hour (roughly Google GKE/AWS EKS standard nodes). Actual costs vary by cloud provider, region, node type, and reserved pricing.
What does 'guaranteed' vs 'burstable' QoS mean?▼
If requests === limits for all containers, the pod gets 'Guaranteed' QoS — highest priority, last to be evicted. If requests < limits, it's 'Burstable'. If no requests/limits are set, it's 'BestEffort' — first to be killed under pressure.
