Frequently Asked Questions

Where does this tool get package data?▼

All data is fetched live from the official PyPI JSON API (pypi.org/pypi/{package}/json). No server is involved — your browser calls PyPI directly. The data reflects the current state of the package on PyPI at the time of your query.

What does 'Requires-Python' mean?▼

The Requires-Python field specifies the minimum Python version the package supports. For example, '>=3.8' means the package only works on Python 3.8 or newer. Always check this before installing in a project that targets an older Python version.

What are package classifiers?▼

Classifiers are standardized metadata tags that describe the package — things like development status (Alpha, Beta, Production), license, programming language, and topic. They help users discover packages and understand compatibility at a glance on PyPI.

How do I check a package's dependencies before installing?▼

This tool shows the 'Requires-Dist' field from package metadata — the list of runtime dependencies. You can compare the latest vs a specific version's dependencies to understand how they evolved. For a full transitive dependency tree, use 'pip install pipdeptree' locally.

What is the difference between sdist and wheel?▼

sdist (source distribution) is the raw Python source code packaged as a tarball — it must be compiled/built during install. wheel (.whl) is a pre-built binary package that installs faster since no compilation is needed. Most modern packages provide wheels for common platforms. If only sdist is available, you may need a C compiler.

Why does this tool show 'Yanked' releases?▼

A yanked release is a version that the maintainer has marked as broken or unsafe. pip will not install a yanked version unless explicitly requested with ==version. It's different from deletion — the version remains on PyPI for existing users but is excluded from normal version resolution.
