Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Sentry DSN?▼

A DSN (Data Source Name) is the URL Sentry uses to route events to the correct project. It contains your protocol, public key, Sentry host, and project ID. Every SDK init call requires a valid DSN — if it's malformed, events are silently dropped.

What is the Sentry DSN format?▼

DSN format: {protocol}://{publicKey}@{host}/{projectId}. Example: https://[email protected]/5678. The public key is a hex string, the host includes your org slug on ingest.sentry.io, and the project ID is numeric.

Can I use a DSN in client-side JavaScript?▼

Yes — the DSN is intentionally public. It only accepts incoming events (write-only). It cannot be used to read your event data or access your Sentry account. Never confuse the DSN with your Sentry API auth token, which is secret.

What is the difference between ingest.sentry.io and o1234.ingest.sentry.io?▼

The o{orgId}.ingest.sentry.io format is Sentry's current recommended ingest URL for cloud-hosted Sentry. Older DSNs may use sentry.io directly. Self-hosted Sentry uses your own domain. All formats are valid as long as the SDK can reach the host.
