Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Solana Program ID?▼

A Solana Program ID (also called a Program Address) is the public key of a deployed program's keypair. It's a base58-encoded 32-byte Ed25519 public key that uniquely identifies a program on the Solana blockchain. When users interact with your program, they reference it by this ID.

What is the difference between a Program ID and a PDA?▼

A Program ID is a real keypair address — it has a corresponding private key used to upgrade/deploy the program. A PDA (Program Derived Address) is derived deterministically from seeds + program ID, has no private key, and can only be signed by the program itself. PDAs are used for program-owned accounts like user vaults, metadata, and state accounts.

How do I generate a vanity Program ID?▼

Use `solana-keygen grind` to find keypairs whose public key starts with a specific prefix. Example: `solana-keygen grind --starts-with ABC:1`. This is computationally intensive. For production programs, the keypair's private key is the authority to upgrade the program — keep it secure.

What is a PDA (Program Derived Address)?▼

PDAs are deterministic addresses derived from seeds and a program ID. They're 32-byte points NOT on the Ed25519 curve (so no valid private key exists). Generated via `findProgramAddress(seeds, programId)`. Used for storing program state, token vaults, metadata accounts, and as signers in CPIs (Cross-Program Invocations).

What is the bump seed in PDAs?▼

When deriving a PDA, the system tries different bump values (255 down to 0) until it finds an address not on the Ed25519 curve. The canonical bump is the first valid value found. Always store and reuse the canonical bump — it avoids re-deriving the PDA in your program and is a security best practice.
