Frequently Asked Questions

What is TTFT (Time to First Token) and why does it matter?▼

TTFT is the time elapsed between sending your API request and receiving the first token of the response. For streaming applications — chatbots, copilots, live coding assistants — TTFT is the primary perceived latency. A low TTFT (under 200ms) makes the interface feel instant and responsive even if total generation time is long. A high TTFT (500ms+) creates a noticeable 'thinking' delay that degrades user experience. TTFT is influenced by model size, server load, prompt length, and whether the provider uses speculative decoding or dedicated hardware.

Why does latency matter for production AI applications?▼

User experience research consistently shows that response times above 200-300ms are perceived as 'slow', and above 1000ms users start losing focus. For AI products, high latency can mean lower engagement, higher churn, and worse task completion rates. In API-intensive pipelines (RAG, agents, chained calls), latency compounds — a 5-step chain with 300ms TTFT per step adds 1.5 seconds of overhead before any output appears. Choosing a low-latency model for interactive steps and reserving high-quality (but slower) models for background processing is a common production pattern.

Why is Groq's Llama 3.1 70B so much faster than other providers?▼

Groq uses custom Language Processing Units (LPUs) — purpose-built silicon for transformer inference. Unlike GPUs which are optimized for training and general parallel compute, LPUs are designed specifically for the sequential token generation phase of LLM inference. This allows Groq to achieve 800+ tokens/second throughput vs 40-200 tok/s on standard GPU infrastructure. The tradeoff is that Groq offers fewer models, no fine-tuning, and no multimodal support compared to OpenAI or Anthropic. For latency-critical use cases like real-time voice AI or competitive gaming assistants, Groq is often the best option.

How do I choose between models that differ in latency vs. quality?▼

Use a tiered model strategy based on task complexity. For real-time user-facing interactions (chat, autocomplete, simple Q&A): prioritize latency — use GPT-4o mini, Claude Haiku, or Gemini Flash. For complex reasoning tasks that happen in the background (document analysis, code review, research): prioritize quality over speed — use GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, or Claude Opus. For cost-sensitive high-volume pipelines: use the cheapest model that meets your quality bar, then upgrade only the steps that fail quality checks. A/B test model choices on a sample of your traffic before committing at scale.
