Installation

GPT4All is available as a desktop app and a Python library. Download the desktop app from gpt4all.io or install the SDK via pip:

LocalDocs: RAG on Your Files

LocalDocs is GPT4All's standout feature — it indexes your local files and lets the AI answer questions based on your documents, all without leaving your machine. Setup takes about 30 seconds:

# 1. Click the paperclip icon or go to Settings > LocalDocs
# 2. Click "+ Add Collection" and name it (e.g., "Work Docs")
# 3. Add folders to watch (PDF, DOCX, TXT, CSV, MD, HTML)
# 4. GPT4All indexes all files automatically (runs in background)
# 5. In a new chat, click the LocalDocs icon and select your collection
# 6. Ask questions — answers are grounded in your documents
