Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are the cost estimates?▼

The estimates are rough ballpark figures based on representative on-demand pricing as of early 2024. Actual costs vary significantly based on region, reserved/spot pricing, data transfer, and usage patterns. Always use the official AWS Pricing Calculator or Infracost for accurate production estimates.

Which cloud providers and resources are supported?▼

Currently AWS and GCP resources are supported, including EC2/Compute instances, RDS/Cloud SQL databases, S3/GCS storage, ElastiCache/Memorystore, EKS/GKE node pools, Lambda/Cloud Functions, ALB/NLB, CloudFront, and NAT Gateway. Azure support is partial.

What Terraform syntax is supported?▼

The tool parses HCL-style resource blocks: resource "aws_instance" "name" { ... }. It extracts common attributes like instance_type, engine, db_instance_class, node_type, and min/max size for auto-scaling groups. Complex expressions and variable references are resolved to defaults.

What is Infracost?▼

Infracost is an open-source tool that integrates with Terraform to show cost estimates in pull requests. It uses real pricing APIs and supports 1000+ resource types across AWS, Azure, and GCP. Use it in CI/CD pipelines via GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or as a pre-commit hook.

Why are reserved instance costs not shown?▼

Reserved instances can reduce costs by 30–72% depending on term length and payment option. This tool shows on-demand rates as the worst-case baseline. For production workloads, apply a 30–50% discount multiplier to estimate reserved pricing.

Does this tool send my Terraform code to a server?▼

No. All parsing and estimation runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your infrastructure code — which may contain resource names, sizes, and topology — never leaves your machine.
