Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Prisma schema file?▼
A Prisma schema file (schema.prisma) is the single source of truth for your database. It defines the datasource (DB connection), generator (Prisma Client), and data models. Prisma uses it to generate type-safe client code, run migrations, and introspect existing databases.
What Prisma field types are available?▼
Prisma supports: String, Int, Float, Decimal, Boolean, DateTime, Json, Bytes, BigInt. String maps to VARCHAR, Int to INTEGER, DateTime to TIMESTAMP, Json to JSONB in PostgreSQL. Use @db attributes for native type overrides like @db.VarChar(255).
What is the difference between @id, @unique, and @@unique?▼
@id marks a single field as the primary key (e.g., id Int @id). @unique ensures column-level uniqueness. @@unique is a multi-field composite unique constraint at the model level, e.g. @@unique([userId, slug]). Every Prisma model needs exactly one @id or @@id.
What does @default() do in Prisma?▼
@default() sets the value inserted when none is provided. Common patterns: @default(autoincrement()) for integer PKs, @default(cuid()) or @default(uuid()) for string IDs, @default(now()) for creation timestamps, @default(false) for boolean flags.
How do I add relations in Prisma?▼
Pair a relation field with a scalar FK field: 'author User @relation(fields: [authorId], references: [id])' alongside 'authorId Int'. Prisma supports one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many (implicit via Prisma-managed join table, or explicit via a join model).
